Flicks
Movies, reviews & your views.
Flicks.co.nz is New Zealand's independent film opinion. A place where all things filmic are reviewed, debated, researched and presented on a platter for our large and loyal community of users. Flicks.co.nz has its finger on the pulse and its ear to the ground presenting the latest reviews, session times, trailers, competitions, news, debates and New Zealand's most independent Top 10 movie list.
Movie-goers, their backgrounds and interests, are as broad, diverse and rich as the films they enjoy, but the one thing that binds them all is the excitement, passion and escapism that great cinema evokes. The glamour, controversy and interest that the movie industry and its stars create fuels passionate interest and Flicks.co.nz capitalises on this sticky content.
Is it our climate? Our creative nature? Or our "number-8 wire" attitude? What ever the reason, the fact remains - New Zealanders love to watch (and make!) movies. Flicks.co.nz is actively involved in the coal-face of New Zealand's love for movies and most recently sponsored the 48Hours Film Festival, and the New Zealand International Film Festival.
History
As lovers of movies and movie making, the team started Flicks.co.nz in 2005 simply because there was no place for NZ film-fanatics (like themselves) to get the content they demanded. Before this, there was only a baron wasteland of individual cinema sites - no trailers, no reviews... nothing. The site quickly grew to include session times, trailers, film credits and info, international reviews and box office stats. Then it wasn't just the fanatics that wanted a piece of the action - the general public caught wind and found a local one-stop-shop for movie going.
The Team
Paul Scantlebury studied at the New York Film Academy in 2000 and followed that with a Masters in Screen Production from the University of Auckland in 2005. He has directed and written many short films, the latest of which played at the 2007 New Zealand Film Festival
IdeaHQ Involvement
IdeaHQ invested in July 2008 for an initial 25% stake. With this investment Flicks rebuilt its website onto a new platform (Built by PixelFusion) which has seen its traffic grow by over 100% to 105,000 users in July 2009.
